How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is a key treatment method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been practiced for thousands of years. It involves inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate natural regulatory processes and support the body's ability to restore balance.
Acupuncture from a Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is closely connected to the balanced flow of Qi (vital energy) through pathways known as meridians.
When this flow becomes disrupted, it is believed to contribute to pain, tension and other health problems.
By stimulating carefully selected acupuncture points, treatment aims to restore the harmonious flow of Qi, balance Yin and Yang, and support the body's natural healing processes.
How Acupuncture Affects the Body
Modern research suggests that acupuncture can influence several physiological processes:
-
Pain Regulation: Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves and may activate the release of the body's natural pain-relieving substances, including endorphins.
-
Nervous System Regulation: Acupuncture can influence the autonomic nervous system, which plays an important role in stress responses, relaxation and sleep.
-
Blood Circulation: Needle stimulation may improve local blood flow and influence tissue responses.
-
Muscle Relaxation: Acupuncture may help reduce muscle tension and relieve certain types of musculoskeletal pain.
These effects help explain why acupuncture is used for a variety of conditions, particularly chronic pain, headaches and stress-related symptoms.
A Holistic and Individualized Approach
In my practice, acupuncture is not based solely on the location of your symptoms. I also consider your overall health, sleep, stress levels and individual constitution.
This allows me to select acupuncture points and develop a treatment approach tailored to your personal needs.
What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Treatment
Every acupuncture treatment in my practice is tailored to your individual needs. My goal is to create a comfortable, relaxing experience while addressing your specific health concerns.
1. Initial Consultation
Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and overall well-being.
Following the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I may also examine your tongue and pulse to gain a better understanding of your individual constitution and possible imbalances.
2. Your Acupuncture Treatment
Based on your symptoms and individual TCM assessment, I select appropriate acupuncture points.
Very fine, sterile, single-use needles are gently inserted into specific areas of the body. Most patients experience little discomfort during insertion. You may notice a mild tingling, warmth or a sensation of heaviness around certain points.
3. Relaxation and Rest
Once the needles are in place, you can relax comfortably on the treatment table for approximately 20–30 minutes.
This quiet period allows you to rest and unwind. Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing.
When appropriate, I may complement acupuncture with gentle heat therapy using a traditional TDP mineral heat lamp.
4. Your Individual Treatment Plan
The number and frequency of sessions depend on your symptoms, how long they have been present and your individual response to treatment.
Some patients notice changes after just a few sessions, while chronic conditions may require a longer course of treatment.
We will discuss a suitable treatment plan together and adjust it according to your progress.
Complementary Therapies – Heat Therapy & Cupping
In my practice, acupuncture can be complemented by traditional therapeutic methods such as mineral heat therapy and cupping. These treatments can be combined with acupuncture to promote relaxation, relieve muscle tension and support overall well-being.
TDP Mineral Heat Therapy – Soothing Deep Warmth
For additional relaxation and comfort, I use a specialized TDP mineral heat lamp inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Unlike conventional red light lamps, the TDP lamp contains a ceramic-coated mineral plate with a blend of natural minerals. When heated, this plate emits infrared radiation that provides soothing warmth to the treated area.
This gentle heat therapy can help relax tense muscles, promote local circulation and provide welcome relief from stiffness and discomfort.
It is particularly pleasant for patients experiencing back pain, neck tension or joint discomfort.
Cupping Therapy – A Traditional Healing Method
Cupping is another traditional treatment method used in Chinese medicine.
During treatment, special cups are placed on the skin to create gentle suction. This stimulates the underlying tissues and increases local blood circulation.
Cupping is traditionally used to:
-
Relieve muscle tension and stiffness
-
Support local blood circulation
-
Ease back, neck and shoulder discomfort
-
Promote relaxation and a feeling of physical well-being
Depending on your individual needs, cupping may be used on its own or in combination with acupuncture.
Both therapies are selected according to your symptoms and personal treatment goals.

Acupuncture Costs & Insurance
Acupuncture Treatment: From €60 per session
Acupuncture treatments are billed privately.
Many international and private health insurance plans provide coverage for acupuncture treatments. Several of my American patients have their treatment costs reimbursed by their insurance providers.
Coverage depends on your individual insurance policy. I will provide you with an invoice that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
